The Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry provides under graduate and post graduate training in comprehensive oral health care for Pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence including children with special health care needs. The Department thrives to achieve a high ethical standard of practice, promotion of education, and research in the field of Pediatric Dentistry.Through various lnter-Departmental activities within the Departments of Medicine like Pediatrics, Plastic surgery, anaesthesiology and within the other Departments of Pediatric Dentistry, patient care is improved to a great extent along with the clinical learning and research increases. Our clinics provide comprehensive oral health examinations,teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments, sealants, restorative procedures (fillings, crowns, etc.), extractions, minor surgical procedures, space-maintainers, interceptive orthodontics, laser treatment and trauma management. We render rehabilitative treatment under general anesthesia for very young children with special health care needs and treatment under conscious sedation for children
with anxiety . School Dental Health Programs are regularly conducted among the children/ parent/ teachers to create awareness about common oral health problems in children and their prevention.

Undergraduate program

     The department is involved in teaching the undergraduate students of the 3 rd and 4 th year by actively engaging them in theoretical and clinical aspects of Pediatric Dentistry. Modern methods of teaching and learning for the undergraduates, apart from the traditional classroom teaching for the benefit of the students. One year of compulsory rotational internship offered by the department.
Academic evaluation of the students is done using evaluation sheets which adapts the Dental
Council of India’s and Kerala University of Health Sciences’ requirements.
Postgraduate program
The speciality post-graduate training began in 2019 with an intake of 2 students per batch and
provides training in comprehensive Pediatric dental care including Pediatric restorative, endodontic,
orthodontic, oral surgical procedures and management of oral pathological conditions, which involves understanding and allaying behaviours of the child up to 13 years. For an all-round clinical training,each post graduate student is sent to the departments of Paediatrics, Child Development Centre,Anesthesia and Cleft Lip and Cleft palate clinics, for 2 weeks of posting each during their course.

The academic training includes seminars, journal clubs and case discussions to strengthen the clinical ability of the students. Academic evaluation of the postgraduate students are done using evaluation sheets which adapts the Dental Council of India’s and KUHS requirement
Faculty Training
The faculty members of the department are trained in latest teaching and learning
methodologies through CDE programmes, workshops and by attending conferences, and employ
these updates in day to day teaching.

Dental Operatory Room Assistant (DORA)
The DORA students are posted in the Department and are provided hands-on chair side assistance training to equip them to assist in all dental procedures done for the child with special emphasis on infection control.

  • Special Health Care Needs Treatment : 
  • Full Mouth Rehabilitation under General Anesthesia Very young children who require extensive dental treatment and are not able to tolerate routine chair-side behaviour management and those with medical special needs are provided dental treatment under General Anesthesia, in well-equipped and manned hospital settings routinely.
  • Dental Care for Special Children 
    Children with special health care needs are given treatment in specialized rooms shielded
    from routine disturbances in a well-equipped special child room. Routine interactions
    with the medical specialities of the attached multi-specialty hospital provides effective
    and safe dental care for the medically compromised children
  • Conscious Sedation
    A Conscious Sedation Unit helps provide supportive care for those with mild and
    moderate anxiety on an ambulatory basis, without hospital admission.
