The One Stop Destination to meet Excellent Oral Physicians and Maxillofacial Imageologist The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is a dual speciality which is concerned with the diagnosis and optimum oral health care of patients along with medical management of disorders affecting the oral and maxillofacial region and maxillofacial imaging.

The Oral Medicine department identifies and correlates oral and systemic health and we specialize in the care for medically compromised patients and for those undergoing cancer therapy. The department emphasis on prevention and management of salivary gland diseases, management of orofacial pain and other neuro-sensory disorders and oral mucosal lesions.The Department deals with spreading and promoting awareness and motivation, early detection of diseases and personalized patient care with a holistic treatment approach. We carry out preliminary screening of the dental patients who report for treatment in our institution.

We frequently receive referrals from private clinic and hospitals forthe expert management of oral mucosal lesions. The Radiology wing of our department equips the budding dentists in the field of diagnosis using conventional and advanced imaging modalities. The department has both manual and digital IOPA machine and a digital panoramic machine that has been networked for access throughout the institution. The department houses a state of the art full volume CBCT scanning machine with cutting-edge technology which, provides regular CBCT service and reports to the patients referred from other departments and from private practitioners.

Departmental Activities

Our department has taken active participation in organizing and chairing the scientific session of the Kerala State OOO conclave in 2018 and 2020 in association with the Department of Oral Surgery and Department of Oral Pathology.

We have also conducted several state and national Continuing Dental Education programmes in the last 5 years with eminent national and international speakers.

We celebrate World Radiology Day on November 8th every year. As a part of the celebration, we conduct poster and quiz competitions. The best posters and winners of the quiz competition are awarded with certificates and prizes.

We celebrate Oral Medicine Day with various competitions pertaining to the day.

Academic Activities of the Department

The teaching program for undergraduates includes student centric approaches such as didactic lectures, discussion of clinical cases, demonstration of radiographic techniques and discussion by the faculty. At the conclusion of the course the students shall acquire skills in

a) diagnosing diverse array of oral diseases

b) instituting various investigations

c) taking and interpreting intra oral radiographs

d) effective communication with the patient

e) presenting seminars and developing teaching skills.

• Our undergraduates have secured 100% percentage pass in the subject of Oral Medicine and Radiology with several distinctions.
• We impart radiology guidance for the post graduates of our institution. We conduct a training programme titled ‘Applied Professional Experience Posting’ for the post graduates of Pedodontics Department annually.
• We also guide the post graduates regarding the feasibility of conducting radiology related studies.
• Every year we train DORA (dental operatory room assistant) students with radiology exercises and conduct theory classes for them.
• We guide undergraduate students with research projects, short studies and help them in getting their study published in an indexed journal.
